Tips on Traveling—Cash, Credit & Debit Card Usage
It’s important to protect your money while you’re traveling. We recommend that you take a modest amount of cash, your Union Bank Debit MasterCard and at least one back-up credit card with you. These cards are convenient while traveling because they are easy to carry, easy to use and often offer good exchange rates.
Plan ahead to ensure a smooth trip:
- ATMs in many international countries may only accept four-digit personal identification numbers (PINs) and some countries have keyboards with numbers only. If you wish, you may change your Union Bank Debit Card PIN at one of our many ATM‘s before you take your trip.
- Call Union Bank the week before leaving town to let us know when and where you will be traveling to avoid account holds or transaction rejections for out-of-the-ordinary transactions. Unusual transactions might otherwise appear to be fraudulent activity on your account and cause your account to be flagged.
- Keep a back-up credit card separate from the rest of your wallet in the event that your wallet is lost or stolen.
Bring a list of emergency phone numbers, including the country code — and remember that toll-free numbers generally can only be used in the United States and Canada. Union Bank’s toll-free number is 1.800.753.4343 and our regular number is 802.888.6600.
- Check with your credit-card provider to see if perks include travel accident insurance or travelers’ assistance. Union Bank Advantage Banking customers have access to such benefits with the MasterCard World Debit Card.
- Check your balance and your credit card limits before you leave. Know how much you can withdraw at a time, and remember to save all your receipts while you’re gone.
- Thoroughly check any ATMs that you use to be sure its façade hasn’t been altered in an effort to capture card data. Check the card reader to be sure it hasn’t been tampered with or otherwise altered.
